The team

Gerald Assouline

I got educated in social sciences, with a PhD at the University of Grenoble (1983). It is in Brazil with landless farmers that i carry out my first professional visual projects, by associating farmers to the production of didactic tools (films, slide shows) used for their training. After having worked and travelled in many Latin American countries, I discover Europe in its diversity. From 1999, I travel a lot in the Eastern part of Europe, attracted by Eastern borders and borderlands. For my first trip to Latvia in 1999, I had read Bokov’s beautiful book Déjeuner au bord de la Baltique. Till which point, this reading influenced my gaze ? On a very long run project, more than 15 years, my intention was to perceive changes of Eastern societies in transition, with a deliberate subjective focus. So the book aims to share this ambition.
